There are two major types of hound hunting dogs. They are sight hounds and scent hounds. An example of a sight hound is a Whippet. Sight hounds are known for being able to adapt for speed and visual perception and making dog training an ease. Whippets will see prey from a distance, stalk it and then go after it. They also neatly kill their prey within moments of catching them. Sight hounds in general work quickly and silently. They are also an independent breed by nature. The other type of hound is a scent hound, which the most well known is a coonhound. Coonhounds hunt by smelling out their prey. Scent hounds are used to follow and occasional kill the prey. They hunt within a pack and lead the hunters to the prey.  They sometime kill the prey. Scent hounds are also known for their work in the policing field because they are trained to follow scent trails. Some hounds have deep and booming voices. There is also another type of hound, Lurchers, which is a cross between Greyhound, Scottish deerhound and Collie.
